Rather than going for the cookie jar, you should reach for nuts which are a healthier alternative. Almonds are the ideal pick since they are rich in protein, fiber, vitamin E, and monounsaturated fats. Almonds contain magnesium which also lowers blood pressure and prevents the formation of plaques. Walnuts are also an excellent omega-3 fatty acid source. They increase ‘good cholesterol’ and minimizes ‘bad cholesterol,’ which in turn reduces the risk of arterial accumulation of plaque. The American Heart Association recommends taking three to five servings of nuts a week. Nuts can make a good salad topper.
